Gift shop, guided tour of the mansion by very knowledgeable guide, went in the old schoolhouse, 2nd floor museum, several Jefferson Davis historical items and paintings, Civil War paintings and memorabilia … 2 hours to see everything, more to read it all
This is a great chance to look at a beautiful old home and discover some Confederate history. The cemetery is a beautiful place dedicated to the fallen soldiers of the south. The grounds are really nice. The library is also quite fascinating. Highly recommend.
My visit to Beauvoir was a wonderful experience. Our tour guide took us around in a golf cart and she thoroughly explained the history of Beauvoir. I found the story of " Polly the Mule" very touching. Also, the graves of the long deceased Confederate soldiers was very somber. Finally, I learned a lot more about Jefferson Davis and I have a much better understanding of the South's perspective on the Civil War. I would highly recommend a visit to Beauvoir, as history needs to be respected and understood, and not white-washed by hysterical hypochondriacs of history.
My husband and I visited Beauvoir this morning. First, the guide was rude and seemed to delight in embarrassing the visitors when they did not know the answer to a question he asked. However, I have NEVER been on a tour in which the visitors were bombarded with so much misinformation. Either the guide was poorly educated, or he deliberately gave incorrect information. In fact, I would say over half of what he told us was not correct. Don’t waste your money if you actually want to learn something about Jefferson Davis! Just a few examples of the incorrect information that was given during the tour: • The guide stated that the clock in the hallway was a grandmother clock because it had a “waist”. FACT: A grandmother clock is distinguished from a grandfather clock only by its size. The grandmother clock is both shorter and thinner, but is the same shape. • The four on the clock was in Roman numerals but was written as IIII rather than IV. The guide stated that this was because it was a colonial clock. FACT: Even today, most clocks and watches with Roman numerals have the four written as IIII….I checked at Walmart today and found clocks with the IIII on the face. • The guide stated that Jefferson Davis rebuilt the White House after it was burned by the British. FACT: The White House was rebuilt in 1817 when Jefferson was only 9-10 years old. • There were many, many other pieces of incorrect information as well. I should have made a list!
Beauvoir is a beautiful home! The tour and the library on site provide an interesting and informative way to learn about Mississippi history. I highly recommend the tour of the house and library for individuals, families, and student field trips.
