This bandshell was built in 1923 to replace a much smaller one which was part of the original Central Park plan. It began its life as a stage almost exclusively for classical concerts, but quickly expanded to include much, much more.

This gorgeous Italian-style terrace is framed by five Romanesque arches. The steps ahead lead down to Bethesda Terrace, the heart of Central Park. It was crucial to the original design for the park and remains one of the most beautiful places in New York City.

The Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir is a decommissioned reservoir in Central Park in the borough of Manhattan, New York City, stretching from 86th to 96th Streets. It covers 106 acres and holds over 1,000,000,000 US gallons of water.

The original designers hoped the splash of green from pine trees would liven people’s moods during the long, bleak winters. These trees, unfortunately, didn’t last very long.

During the 60s and 70s, this lawn saw heavy use for performances by such wildly popular artists as Elton John and Simon and Garfunkel. This had the unfortunate side effect of killing most of the grass and turning the Great Lawn into a Great Dustbowl.

This is home to the Public Theater, which puts on regular performances of Shakespeare and other classic plays. It is one of the newer additions to Central Park, having opened in 1962. Since then, over 150 theatrical productions have been held in this open-air theater.

It was built because the designers of the park thought it would add a nice touch of whimsy to the landscape. It was never actually a functioning castle but instead serves as one of the park’s visitor centers.

The design of the memorial was heavily influenced by Lennon’s widow, Yoko Ono. She said there were enough statues in central park already, and wanted something more alive. That’s why there’s a mosaic instead.

Olmsted and Vaux had hoped to create a place of natural beauty which would refresh and uplift visitors who simply looked upon it. This is as close to their original vision as one can get.

Opposite the four corners of rectangular Central Park, four individual plazas and squares mark unique transition points between city and park. ...
